Outreach is a passion project of the AUGA, and since 2013 we have built up a strong program, generously funded by the SEG Foundation,
We currently have a fantastic relationship with DEVORA and QuakeCore, working together to provide a broad natural hazards outreach display, ranging from the science behind volcanoes and earthquakes, as well as their impact on our communities.
If you have an event you'd like us to bring our demonstration to, get in touch at [email protected].
If you're a student and want to get involved, send us an email at [email protected]

2016 Outreach Highlights
L'Oreal Women in Science
University of Auckland
Earth Sciences at the University of Auckland has a fantastic representation of women in science, with a large number of faculty leaders and role models, including acting head of the School of Environment Jan Lindsay, and Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Kathy Campbell.
This year the Earthscience demonstration at the L'Oreal Women in Science Event, aimed at encouraging high-school students to get into the sciences, was organised entirely by Research Fellows and Postgraduate Students. The AUGA provided volunteers for the Geology demo, and ran another section focusing on practical applications of geology and career opportunities within New Zealand.

Shake, Rattle & Roll
Auckland Heritage Festival
The Auckland Heritage Festival provided the first opportunity for the collaboration between the AUGA, DEVORA and QuakeCore to really get to work. This was a highly successful event, showcasing the unique geological hazards of Auckland to hundreds of kids of all ages and their parents. DEVORA presented their popular volcano activities, the AUGA focused on earthquakes and plate tectonics, and QuakeCore took care of earthquake impacts, including construction and liquefaction.
We had fantastic feedback from the public as to the calibre of our volunteers, and the enjoyment kids got from the demonstrations. This was a highly successful event for us, and something we plan to build on in 2017.
