SEG Foundation Grants |
We have been extremely fortunate and proud at the University of Auckland to have received the Student Leadership Symposium Travel Grant for the past four years running, sending student executives to the SLS and the SEG Annual Meeting since 2013.
2013 - Houston, TX; Leighton Watson 2014 - Denver, CO; Jackson MacFarlane 2015 - New Orleans, LA; Ashleigh Fromont 2016 - Dallas, TX; Joel Forsyth The rewards from this have been directly paid back into the Student Chapter, with the inspiration and collaboration from other student chapter leaders around the globe invaluable. Experiences gained from these opportunities led to the foundation of the AUGA. |
Outreach has been the strongest focus of the SEG Student Chapter here from the very beginning, and this has been reflected in recent SEG Grants.
We have been strong supporters of the Ru Seismometers in Schools project. This is a partnership between the SEG Foundation, the Earthquake Commission, and the University of Auckland, to provide free seismometers and geophysics outreach to schools across New Zealand. The idea of the Ru network is not only to teach the practical concepts of seismology in the classroom, but to create a nationwide school community. After a big quake, schools can log on to the site and see a live feed from any station across the country. They can then use the feed from other schools to locate the earthquake themselves. Thanks largely to the hard word of James Clarke, PhD at the University of Auckland, the network has expanded over the past year to over 29 stations across New Zealand.
If you are interested in the Ru network or keen to get a seismometer for your school (it's free!) check it out here. In 2016 the Chapter received the SEG Student Chapter Outreach Grant, to help develop materials for an outreach program accompanying the implementation of the Seismometers in Schools project.
